MEDICAL SECTION

The Medical Section has the mandate to ensure the workforce is healthy and productive thereby enabling the organization to achieve its goals. The main function of the Medical Section is to enhance lives and preserve the health of the National Railways of Zimbabwe employees, their families and the extended community by enabling them to access a comprehensive fully integrated network of great care delivered with competency, compassion, integrity and respect. The vision of the section is to enable every member of the community that we serve to enjoy a better, healthier and productive life.

The Healthcare Services Offered

The Medical Section is comprised of sixteen [16] clinics that are located in strategic stations countrywide to enable the employees and their families to access healthcare. These clinics are categorized in the understated three functional groups that provide particular services in a coordinated approach.

Administrative Clinics

These clinics are well equipped with special equipment for medical examinations. These are: Main Surgery situated at corner 14th Avenue and Lobengula Street in Bulawayo and George Silundika clinic along George Silundika Avenue in Harare offering the following healthcare services.

 Medical Examinations:

  • Pre-employment medical examinations are done on prospective employees to check their fitness for the intended duties
  • Periodical medical examinations are conducted on employees who are already in the service to check if they are still fit for their duties or if they have developed occupational health problems.
  • Exit medical examinations are done on employees when they leave service to check if they have acquired any occupational conditions during their service.

  • Management of non communicable and communicable diseases
  • Treatment of Opportunistic Infections
  • B Screening and treatment
  • Initiating Anti Retroviral Treatment
  • Minor Surgical treatment
  • Treatment of Injury On Duty and processing the National Social Security [NSSA] WCIF 14 forms and dressing accounts.

  • HIV Counselling and Testing
  • Awareness Campaigns regarding health problems
  • Counseling on health, work related and social problems

Industrial Clinics

The clinics are located inside the workshops where the majority of the employees operate heavy machinery. The Clinics are Mechanical Workshops in Bulawayo, Kenneth Kaunda in Harare, Dabuka in Gweru and Mutare, they cater for the employees only, offering the under mentioned healthcare services.

  1. Community Based Clinics

These clinics are located away from the workshops hence they offer services to employees and their dependents as well as to the general public at no cost as a social responsibility service: We have Sizinda Clinic in Bulawayo, Rugare Clinic in Harare, Gweru clinic in Gweru, Hwange Clinic in Hwange, Dete Clinic in Dete, Beitbrige clinic in Beitbridge and Rutenga clinic in Rutenga, Bunnockburn Clinic in Bannock burn, Triangle and Chiredzi Clinics in Triangle and Chiredzi respectively. The healthcare services encompass:

Disaster Preparedness

A well-equipped robust disaster management team for prompt response in cases of derailments, natural disasters, disease outbreaks and other calamities is in place. The team works with the Civil Protection Unit.

HIV and AIDS Programmes

Within the Medical Section there is department of HIV and AIDS which is responsible for initiating, developing, coordinating and monitoring HIV and AIDS programs within the organisation. The department also undertakes the following indispensable tasks:

  • Training of Peer Educators
  • Supervising  HIV Counselling and Testing activities
  • Lobbying for Donor Funds
  • Launching HIV and AIDS campaigns in the company
  • Researching and dissemination of Health information pertaining to HIV and AIDS  to all concerned
  • Maintaining nutrition garden
  • Formulating, coordinating and monitoring HIV and AIDS support groups
  • Creating HIV and AIDS drama groups
  • Management of HIV and AIDS data
  • Mobilizing antiretroviral drugs, materials, and test kits for the clinics

Ambulances Services

We have a fleet of 12 ambulances system wide for use in cases of emergency, derailments and other disasters as well as routine transportation of patients to designated hospitals.

We work in partnership with other stakeholders sharing knowledge and skills.
