ENGINEERING SERVICES:
The National Railways of Zimbabwe offers a range of engineering services through Inter Rail Tech, which is a rebrand of mechanical and electrical workshops. The workshops are among the largest integrated workshops in Southern Africa.
The workshops are geared to maintain and refurbish locomotives and rolling stock, and manufacture various inputs and spares for the entire railways system, mining and engineering industries.

Maintenance, repair and refurbishment of locomotives
Inter Rail Tech mechanical workshops, located in Bulawayo and Mutare, offer comprehensive locomotive maintenance, repair and refurbishment services:
- Engine overhaul
- Traction motor overhaul

- Wheelset pressing, retrying and reprofiling
- Compressor and expressor overhauls

Inter Rail Tech mechanical workshops, located in Bulawayo and Mutare, offer comprehensive wagon maintenance, repair and refurbishment services:

Maintenance, repair and refurbishment of coaches and cabooses

Inter Rail Tech’s Armature Winding Workshop, located in Bulawayo, specialises in armature winding services:

- Automatic TIG welding

Foundry
The Foundry section has facilities to produce cast iron, brass and aluminium castings.
Blacksmith Shop
The Blacksmith Shop produces high quality forgings in different grades of steel. The shop also manufactures and reconditions various sizes of helical and leaf springs. Heat treatment and testing of springs is done in this shop.
Machining
The Machine Shop boasts of a variety of machinery, which produces a wide range of finished components. Among the most specialised machines are the vertical borers, horizontal borers, CNC lathe, surface grinders and cylindrical grinders. Operations carried out include turning, drilling, planning, boring, milling and gear cutting.
Fabrication
The Platerwelder Shop offers:
- General steel fabrication
- Boiler re-tubing and refurbishment
- Steel sheet rolling up
- Profile cutting sand blasting
- Specialised welding (TIG, cast iron and aluminium welding)
Plant and Equipment hire
A wide range of plant and equipment is available for hire and includes:
- Breakdown crane, 120 ton
- Steam crane, 60 ton
- Re-railing equipment
- Hydraulic and screw jacks
- Wheel press, 100 ton
- Vacuum pressure impregnation plant
Other unique services offered
- Reconditioning of radiators
- Boiler inspections
- Wire and rope repairs and inspections
- Repair and maintenance of pneumatic equipment and chain blocks
- Reconditioning and calibration of pressure gauges.
